This project breaks down barriers of social isolation and loneliness for homeless individuals, creating regular Summer Grill-Outs at The Micah Center hosted by our very own “Grand GrillMaster James,” providing brats, burgers or hot dogs as well as basketball, other fun games and picnic tables for socializing. Grill-outs will take place approximately every other week on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May-October.
Please join us at grill-outs as a guest or a volunteer. Upcoming grill-outs are scheduled at The Micah Center (700 E Walnut St.) from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.:
- May 9, 23
- June 13, 20
- July 11, 25
- Aug. 15, 29
- Sept. 12, 26
- Oct. 3, 17
*Dates are anticipated but subject to change.
How can I get involved?
Guests of The Micah Center, Wellspring and St. John’s Homeless Shelter are invited to join us for regular grill-outs. They will feature meat on the grill with sides, a beverage and dessert. This will be a regular time for you to gather, create friendships and build community.
Current volunteers, neighbors and community members are invited to get involved. We can always use a dish to be made, help setting up and serving. Do you have a lawn game to bring or other activity to share? Contact us at email@example.com or visit our Volunteer webpage to apply to become a volunteer.
How can I get the recipe?
For those of you who attended the Greater Green Bay S.O.U.P. event, you had the opportunity to taste Micah Center Office Manager Vicki’s delicious s’mores bars. Many of you asked for the recipe, and she was delighted to share!
2 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs (I recommend using a food processor to make fine crumbs) and 1 cup of broken graham crackers.
¾ cup melted butter
14 oz sweetened condensed milk
2 cups mini marshmallows
1 cup semisweet chips and 2 broken Hershey chocolate bars (or you can just use 5 Broken Hershey bars)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9×13 baking dish that you have lined with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Yes, butter, not Pam spray. I did not have great success with Pam spray for these. In a bowl mix the graham cracker crumbs with the melted butter. Press the mixture into the prepared dish to make a bottom ‘crust’. Spread the sweetened condensed milk over the top. Sprinkle 1 cup of marshmallows, 1 cup chocolate chips (or Hershey bar bits) and 1 cup broken graham crackers over the top. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle 1 cup marshmallows. Bake for another 15 minutes until marshmallows brown a bit. Remove and place the Hershey bits strategically on the top. Let the pan of s’more bars cool for at least 30 minutes before cutting. If you have used foil or parchment paper, use it to lift the entire rectangle of bars out of the pan. Then cut and serve. Bars will keep on the counter in an airtight container for a few days or in the refrigerator for quite a while.
How is this project funded?
The Micah Center was fortunate to receive funding from the community for our Summer Grill-Outs at The Micah Center. We were recipients of the Spring 2019 Greater Green Bay S.O.U.P. event through the Current Young Professionals Network of the Greater Green Bay Chamber. We were also fortunate to receive support from The Starrys Realty. Thank you!
