- What will my donation be used for?
- Please see the Donors page for some of our common expenses.
- Do I need a PayPal account to donate online?
- No. If you're using a credit card, PayPal will give you the option of charging it directly without creating an account.
- What if I want to donate directly from a checking or savings account?
- In that case you will need to create a PayPal account. Instructions for creating an account are straight-forward and clearly explained on the PayPal site.
- Is my account/credit card information kept safe?
- Yes. PayPal has an https site that protects all data by using an encrypted SSL connection. PayPal does not ever share any of your credit card or bank account information with St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter.
- How does that work?
- Your credit card (or bank account transfer) will be charged by PayPal, not by St. John's. PayPal then transfers the funds (minus their fee) to St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter. PayPal will also provide you with a receipt for tax purposes.
- There's a fee for this?
- Not for you; whatever amount you choose to donate is exactly the amount that will be transferred from your bank account or charged to your credit card. PayPal then deducts 2.2% and 30¢ from that amount and transfers the rest to St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter.
- How much does that work out to be?
- As an example, for a $5.00 dollar donation, 2.2% is 11¢, add the 30¢ to find that PayPal
keeps 41¢ and sends $4.59 to St. John's. So in this case, the cost comes out to be just slightly less
than the price of a first-class postage stamp.
- Is this tax deductible?
- Yes, St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter is a non-profit 501(c)(3) recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt charitable organization. 100% of your donation is tax deductible, including the fee kept by PayPal.
- Why is PayPal asking me to sign into a PayPal account, without giving me the option of simply charging my credit card directly without an account.
- This can happen if PayPal detects a browser cookie that indicates you already have a PayPal account,
perhaps because someone else once logged into a PayPal account from your computer.
If you really don't want to create a PayPal account, then delete your cookies, close your browser, re-open your browser, and try again. Or, if your computer has more than one internet browser (IE, FireFox, Safari, Opera, etc.), try the other browser. Cookies are specific to each browser. - Summary:
- With a PayPal account you can choose to transfer funds
from a bank account, use an existing balance in your PayPal account,
or use any major credit card which will be charged by PayPal.
Without a PayPal account you can charge a credit card (Master Card, Visa, American Express, Discover Card). Again, the transaction will be with PayPal.
Also, once you have a PayPal account, there are many other opportunities to use it for secure online purchases on other internet websites such as eBay.
