Connecting People With Purpose...
St. John the Evangelist Homeless Shelter (SJEHS) seeks to provide night-to-night temporary emergency shelter to adult men and women. All services and assistance are offered in the context of the furtherance of human dignity with the primary goal of harm reduction during the coldest weather months of the year. All people have the right to meet their basic human needs for food, clothing, shelter and medical care. SJEHS allows shelter guests an opportunity for engagement with mainstream shelter and housing resources, mental health and healthcare providers and other social service agencies. From November 6 2007, through May 1, 2008 the shelter hosted 280 individuals: 237 men and 43 women. Of that number, 46 were veterans, 199 had some type of disability, and 97 were considered chronically homeless.Connecting People With People...
Over 500 volunteers contributed over 10,000 hours during the six months that the shelter was open. People served in the following capacities:- Provide hospitality
- Prepare/provide meals
- Organize supplies/donations
- Maintain shelter facilities
- Assist with administrative duties

A listing of the Programs/Services provided on-site at SJEHS
- Outreach Healthcare - Clinic offered once a week providing TB screening services, diagnostic services and referrals, medications and medical case management to 65 guests
- Brown County Prevention & Outreach - Mental health services/referrals
- Housing Choice Voucher Program Outreach - Help completing applications
- "Getting & Keeping A Job" Workshop - Program developed by shelter volunteers
- Clothing/Furniture & Household Vouchers at St. Vincent De Paul
- Transportation Assistance - Staff transport, bus pass
- First Month's Rent and Security Deposit Assistance
- Identification Access Assistance - Help with birth certificates, etc.
- Free Haircuts - Provided referrals to Martin's "Day Maker Program"
- Personal Laundry Service - Provided by shelter volunteers
- Free Tax Preparation - Provided by shelter volunteers
- Care Packages - Household items provided to guests moving into an apartment
- Voter Registration
- Advocacy (housing, community services and other available benefits/programs)
